How to make almost any bean sprout

If you fancy sprouting some beans, here is an easy tutorial on how you can do it quickly and painlessly at home.

This method can work for all sorts of beans and not only does it increase the vitamins and minerals in the beans, it can make the beans easier to digest for some people. You can use this method indoors, at any time of the year.

This method of sprouting can work for:

  • Alfalfa
  • Almonds
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils
  • Quinoa
  • Mung beans
  • Black beans
  • Buckwheat
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Radish seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Millet
  • Brown rice

What you need:

1. A reasonably large mason jar

2. A square cutting of cotton cheesecloth big enough to cover the opening of the jar

3. A rubber band to secure the cloth firmly over the mouth of the jar

4. Fresh beans

How to sprout almost any bean in 10 easy steps

  1. Wash all beans thoroughly before putting them in the jar.
  2. Put half a cup of beans in the jar.
  3. Fill jar with enough water to cover the beans, plus just a little bit more.
  4. Hold the cheesecloth over the opening of the jar and firmly secure with a rubber band.
  5. Soak beans for 12 hours.
  6. Pour water out of jar through the cheesecloth.
  7. Leave the jar of moist beans in a warm spot indoors out of direct sunlight.
  8. Rinse the beans with water twice a day, every day, ensuring you only rinse, and pour out excess water immediately.
  9. Your beans should sprout in two to four days!
  10. They can be refrigerated for two to three days.
  11. Rinse thoroughly before consumption.
