Growing herbs will not only save you money, but the experience of picking your own basil or parsley is extremely rewarding.

That said, herbs can bruise easily if picked incorrectly, affecting the flavour.

"It's super important to not bruise your herbs when picking them off the stems because they lose flavour and vitality,” previous My Kitchen Rules contestant’s Sammy and Bella explain to Better Homes and Gardens.

Take extra special care with your basil.

''Basil is particularly sensitive! Most people will pick the tender leaves using their thumb and forefinger (flesh to flesh!) but the real trick is to use your nail against your thumb. This way you're cutting the stem and not squishing it.''
