WATCH: How to create a Hamptons lounge room
This TV cabinet was solid and well made, plus the base featured a chalk paint finish and a distressed look, perfect for Hamptons style. However, the pine top with its orange varnish needed updating.
Give your old cabinet a makeover in a few simple steps
• Use a sanding block – moving from coarse to finer grades and working in the direction of the grain – to sand back the top to remove varnish from timber. Wipe off all sanding dust.
• Apply a water-based stain and varnish in a soft grey, using long brushstrokes in the direction of the grain. Leave to dry.
• Repeat to apply 2-3 coats, leaving to dry after each and sanding with fine-grit paper in between coats.
