KIDS’ FAIRY GARDEN

Gather your supplies:

  • Wide-mouthed plant pot or large recycled vessel (such as an old wheelbarrow)
  • Selection of small foliage plants, low and spillover plants (look for succulents, small grasses and ground covers)
  • Drill and bits
  • Pebbles, gravel or similar free-draining material
  • Potting mix
  • Fine-grade mulch in a dark colour
  • Mix of fairy world accessories (houses, small tiles, small pebbles, timber offcuts, wire and assorted figurines)
Shop for a selection of small foliage plants, low and spillover plants at your local Bunnings garden centre or nursery.

Here’s how

STEP 1 Whatever vessel you have chosen needs to have drainage holes in the bottom. If you are using a found item, drill an even spread of drainage holes in the base. This is a job for adults only!

STEP 2 Fill the base with a layer of free-draining material, such as pebbles or gravel.

Step 2 Add pebbles or gravel

STEP 3 Add a layer of potting mix. At this point, thoroughly water the potting mix using your garden hose, making sure the water absorbs through the potting mix.

Step 3 Add potting mix, then water well.

STEP 4 On top of the potting mix, add a thin layer of fine grade mulch in a dark colour. The dark colour of the mulch makes the plantings and figurines stand out better.

Step 4 Add a layer of fine, dark-coloured mulch

STEP 5 Add your fairy world accessories. You can make a miniature house from timber offcuts – be imaginative – or use one from your toy box.

STEP 7 Dig small holes and add your selection of plants, using them to represent trees and gardens in the miniature world. Compact the soil and mulch around the base of each planting.

STEP 8 Finish with a picket fence made from timber offcuts and wire. You can even add a little farmyard with farm animal figurines, too! Scatter a thin layer of pebbles to cover the mulch here and there, then add your fairies or other mini characters.

Step 8
Ta-da! The kids will love their own miniature garden, complete with fairy house, pathways, farmyard and more!
