Gather your supplies
Bag of concrete mix
Coarse sand
Plastic tub or wheelbarrow
Hand trowel
Pea-sized gravel
Wooden skewer
Rhubarb leaf
Hessian
Here’s how
Step 1
Start by planning a path of staggered steps matching your stride. Using rhubarb leaf as a guide, carve each stepping-stone hole about 7cm deep.
Step 2
Lay a base of gravel (2.5cm deep) in each hole, then top with a layer of coarse sand (1cm deep).
Step 3
Prepare concrete, adding water slowly.
Step 4
Blend concrete mix with a hand trowel until it’s thoroughly moist but still firm enough to mould.
Step 5
Fill hole evenly with concrete. Using your hands, press and sculpt the concrete into a leaf shape.
Step 6
Press rhubarb leaf, with vein-side down, on the surface of the wet concrete. Press firmly to make a detailed impression, then lift off the leaf.
Step 7
Enhance the impression of the leaf veins by deepening them using a wooden skewer.
Step 8
Cover the stepping stones with pieces of damp hessian. Keep stones covered and damp for a week to help the concrete strengthen while it cures.
