Paint your room to create a backdrop for the revamp, then glue pre-cut panels to the walls for DIY wainscoting.
Gather your supplies
- Undercoat
- Acrylic paint for wall and wainscoting
- 900 x 1200 x 9mm primed interior wall linings (panels)
- Primed rebated timber dado rail
- Selleys No More Gaps Interior
You’ll also need
- Dropsheets
- Paint rollers and trays
- High-strength construction adhesive
- Caulking gun
- Stud finder
- Carpenter’s pencil
- 50mm nails
- Hammer
- Straightedge
- Soft lint-free cloth
For you to note
- By only painting the part of the wall that will be visible above the wainscoting you save on paint and time, plus you don’t have to cut in around the skirting.
- A grey-tinted undercoat hides strong wall colours better than plain white.
Here’s how
Step 1
Lay dropsheets and use a paint roller to apply an undercoat and 2 acrylic topcoats to your walls, leaving to dry after each coat. You don’t need to paint the portion of walls that will be covered by the wainscoting. Also paint the wall panels and leave to dry.
Step 2
Apply dabs of construction adhesive to the back of a wall panel, dabbing in rows. Position panel on wall, starting in a corner, and press in place
Step 3
Use a stud finder to locate wall studs and mark locations on wall panel about 10mm from top.
Step 4
Hammer nails into wall studs through the panel.
Step 5
Continue gluing and adding panels, sliding them together with joining strips, then nailing into studs. Press against panels with long straightedge to make sure they’re flat against the wall and in the same plane.
Step 6
Cut dado rail to length, then apply 2 coats paint, leaving to dry after each. Apply adhesive to back of rail and install with rebate sitting over top of wall panels. The rail should cover nails on wall panels.
Step 7
Use gap filler in space between rail and wall. Wipe away excess with damp cloth. Touch up paint if needed.
