But uninvited guests in the form of flies and mozzies can quickly spoil the party. Keep your next soiree pest free with these simple ideas.
Light a candle
Citronella is a natural mosquito repellent so lighting a citronella candle is the perfect way to keep them away. They also add a soft ambience to your next gathering. There is a range of styles available too. Colourful candles, glass jars or a candle set into a pot means that they are as attractive as they are practical. You can even add a tropical feel using garden torches filled with citronella oil.
Plant wisely
Plants with strong scents act as a deterrent to flies and mosquitoes but thankfully are pleasant to us. Lavender, basil, rosemary and mint planted around your outdoor area will help to keep them at bay. For an even more effective solution, crush up the leaves of the plants and hang them up in a muslin satchel. Crushing the leaves releases essential oils, which is the active ingredient that repels the bugs.
Blow them away
Mosquitoes are poor fliers and a slight breeze will make it difficult for them to get to you. A ceiling fan in a covered area or even a pedestal fan set up outside will keep mozzies away – and also help keep you and your guests cool.
Remove standing water
Mosquitos breed in standing water, so by removing any from around your home will greatly reduce their numbers. If you have a decorative pond, try installing a pump to keep the water moving. Other spots to check include are old pots or buckets where rainwater can collect.
