Young Sam Gerber wrote in to Better Homes and Gardens with a very strange request for a boy of his age. While other 10-year- olds are busy playing video games and playing sport, Sam is a mad keen DIYer.

Sam request was written in the form of a poem:

“Better Homes and Gardens please come and see me.

I’m only 10 years old, but I can build, come and see.

My dad has been in hospital and sick so he can’t help,

My mum has a chronic illness, so I am giving you a YELP.

I’ve been mowing lawns and using tools since I was three.

But my little shed needs help from you; I’ll even make you a cup of tea.

The floor is dirt, the walls all wobble and I dream of a better spot,

To grow my love of building and using wood a lot.”

Sam is the only member of the family who has this crazy passion and is a mad keen helper around the house. The family has been through a rough time in the past couple of years and have not had the time to help Sam create his dream shed.

Sam’s father suffered a breakdown after being a minister and being inundated with the needs of his community 24/7. He was hospitalised and has begun the long journey of recovery. As a result of his illness Katie has developed a disease called Adrenal Fatigue which is a form of chronic Fatigue.

We are going to help Sam not only get the shed of his dreams and get him to help build it but also help him with some other DIY jobs that need to be finished around the house. Katie (Sam’s mum) has put in a new flat pack kitchen and has bought some cool tiles as a feature behind the stove. Alas, after the last year the kitchen has come to a standstill.

Tara is going to get Sam to help with the tiling as well as taking him down to Bunnings to do some shopping and give him simple design tips that will help any design challenged DIYer.
