The thought of wrangling a doona back into its cover is enough to put anyone off washing it for another week.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Digital editor Tahni Mesann has lots to say about putting a quilt cover back on, and she’s got a specific method to doing it. Keeping in mind your newly washed doona and cover, this trick will ensure everything is clean, tidy and simple.

How to put a quilt cover on (the easy way)
Tahni no longer dreads sheet-change day, after working out a way to put her quilt cover back on quickly, and without compromising cleanliness.
While many spend time turning doona covers inside out, flipping and squishing their doona back in, the ‘rolling method’ is favourited by Tahni for two reasons. The first is weight, “quilts and quilt covers (especially if they’re linen or good quality cotton) are heavy. The rolling method requires zero lifting and shaking, which I appreciate.”
The second reason? Cleanliness.
“I can’t stand the idea of bedding touching the floor or dust and lint being thrown about the room. The rolling method allows me to put the cover on and get the quilt right into the corners without anything touching the floor.”
How to put a quilt cover back in using the rolling method
- Turn your doona cover inside out and lay down on the mattress with the opening at the foot of the bed.
- Lay your doona on top of that.
- Roll both the doona and cover like a burrito towards the bottom of the bed.
- Flip the cover over the ends (like in the video above.)
- Do up the fastenings on the cover.
- Unroll it and fasten the cover. Voila! You are done.

How to put a doona cover on without rolling it
Although Tahni swears by the rolling method, the ‘take the corners and flip’ technique works just as well (even if it does require a bit of floorwork).
- Lay your doona cover flat on your bed.
- Feed the left corner of your doona up into the matching corner of the cover. Now do the same on the bottom corner.
- Repeat on the other side.
- Pick up the top corners of your doona, then give it a good shake.
- Fasten the cover.
How often should you wash your doona cover?
This one depends on if you’re using a top sheet or not. If you have a top sheet, you can get away without washing your doona cover for longer. But ideally, you want to wash it every 2 weeks.
How often should you wash your doona?
Similar to sheets and pillows, the doona can accumulate sweat, body oils, and dead cells. Over time, if it’s not cleaned properly; it can attract dust mites and bacteria. As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended that doonas be washed every six months to a year.
Just make sure you read the care instructions before washing. Follow our instructions for washing a doona when it won’t fit in the washing machine.
