The Block has seen many styles come and go, yet year after year the contestants pull out all the stops to create new, invigorating designs that will impress not only the judges, but all of Australia. It’s been no different for this season, with a variety of design details popping up that we love.

These design choices don’t only look aesthetic, they are practical and functional. Here are 9 of the design details we’re loving from The Block this year:

Cosy textures

Cosy colours such as greys, beiges, browns and creams have been popular this season. Contestants have used these understated tones as a base which they’ve built upon with bold feature walls, unique furniture and colourful accessories. A pro of this design is that the room can be restyled easily for various seasons without having to make big, permanent changes. Neutral tones also create an open, spacious feel, and natural textures such as wood and marble fit in seamlessly, making for a textured, cosy space. Maddy and Charlotte’s main bedroom uses beige cabinetry paired with walnut drawers in the walk-in wardrobe, which the judges loved.

“The walnut is definitely on trend,” Darren said.

Asymmetry done right

Symmetry is a basic rule of thumb when it comes to interior design, but in this season of The Block, we’ve seen the contestants constantly do the opposite. Asymmetry is in, and if done well it can create a sense of calm and make a space feel unique. Ricky and Haydn’s guest bedroom pulled off asymmetry in a big way. The back wall has been turned into a large, asymmetrical curved wall with LED strip lighting and a palm tree wallpaper. The bedside tables are also asymmetrical, with one having a bed lamp and the other a small vase. It just works.

Curves and arches

Sharp edges are out, making way for curves and arches. These have been seen week after week on The Block, creating interest in a variety of rooms in the form of mirrors, furniture, feature walls and even lights. Arches in the hallway or on furniture pieces, such as the vanity in Ricky and Haydn’s bathroom, create a cosy, textured and modern effect.

Timber panelling

Timber panelling has been used throughout the season on feature walls, cabinets and ceilings, and in bathrooms. It adds texture, especially when paired with deep colours and neutral tones like Kristian and Mimi’s did in their winning main bedroom. They hit the nail on the head with a timber panelling feature wall which created a calming, coastal and luxurious ambience.

Green details

While the base of a lot of the rooms on The Block follows a neutral palette, many have also incorporated touches of green. This adds a hint of colour while still matching with the earthy tones of the rest of the house. The judges loved Kristian and Mimi’s kitchen, which was a combination of walnut, gold and green.

Hidden curtains

Nobody wants to see a curtain rod sticking out against the wall. Ceiling-high, hidden curtains that cascade to the ground makes a space feel luxurious and more open.

Feature ceilings

It seems walls aren’t the only opportunity to create a statement; now the ceilings are prime real estate, too. From coffered ceilings to timber slatting, decorating the ceiling is the way to go. The judges loved the way Kristian and Mimi incorporated it into their bathroom, calling it a huge success.

LED strip lights

Across various rooms in the home, the contestants used strip LED lighting to enhance and define certain features of the space. They incorporated it behind mirrors, in shower niches, above curtains and in wall features. One example was Kristian and Mini’s winning guest bedroom. Darren said the cloud bed heads was the idea of the day.

09

Shower niche

One of the biggest style choices we saw in the bathroom renovations was incorporating a shower niche. The open storage space in the walls allows soaps, shampoos and other products to be organised nicely. This was installed not only in the shower, but above the bathtub too. It’s a smart space-saving solution which gives an open, uncluttered feel. Courtney and Grant’s guest bathroom did a great job of this over their bath, and in their shower they had half a wall so products could be stored on top.
