Nicky Buckley might be best known as a model and TV host of shows such as ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ and ‘I’m A Celebrity’, but what you might not know is that she’s an avid gardener.
With a busy schedule, though, keeping her garden picture-perfect isn’t easy. “Gardening when you are pressed for time becomes a chore,” she says. So, she’s found a time-saving secret to the perfect lawn, and fortunately, she dished her tips to us.

Nicky’s perfect lawn looks like a “level cut with trimmed edges and no weeds,” she says. Playing into her dream garden, the lack of weeds is clearly the goal. Add to that “a nice, shady tree for summer and a variety of plants that flower at different times of the year, so there’s always some colour.”
The dream isn’t too far off reality, with Nicky’s home having variety in the garden. When her and her husband Murray Bingham built their home, it came with a strict council regulation: plant the perimeter with natives, something Nicky wasn’t too happy about at the time. However, she “quickly fell in love with the variety of beautiful flowering natives that we have in Australia,” she tells us. “Then we have a lot of cacti as you move closer to the actual house – as we built a mid-century modern home that cries out for cactus and succulents. Natives and cacti sound like an odd mix, but I feel like we made them work nicely.”
Nicky also loves to grow her own veggies and herbs.

Nicky’s three golden rules to a healthy lawn? Being as consistent as possible. “Regularly feeding and fertilising it, watering at the right times of day and regular mowing,” she advises. And “try and stay on top of weeding.” For Nicky, when she’s “consistent with it, it makes the job a lot easier” because when it’s “left too long, the job becomes overwhelming.”
