I don’t know about you, but boiling pasta is one of the most mundane and tedious tasks when it comes to cooking a pasta dish. But what if you could swap the stove for the microwave? Sounds like a dream to me.

Whether you’re travelling or staying in an Airbnb without a stove, this is the nifty pasta cooking hack you need to know about. By learning this simple method, you can easily have pasta ready to go in minutes.
How to cook pasta in a microwave
It will roughly take you five minutes to prep and 10 minutes to cook, but in 15 minutes you’ll have piping hot pasta ready to serve four hungry people.
On top of a microwave, you will also need a microwave-safe bowl or baking dish, a wooden spoon and the standard strainer or colander.
Method
- Take your dry pasta and place it in a large microwave-safe bowl and season with salt. Pour 1L (4 cups) water, or enough to completely cover the pasta.
- Microwave on high, for about 5 minutes, then using a wooden spoon give it a stir. Return the bowl to the microwave and further heat high for 2 minute intervals, stirring the pasta each time as you go. The whole process should take around 10 minutes for al dente pasta, but this all depends on your microwave.
- Drain well and serve hot with your favourite pasta sauce.
How long should I microwave pasta for?
The rule of thumb here is to follow the packet directions but add three minutes. However, it’s best to check the pasta in intervals as you don’t want to overcook it.
What pasta types can I cook in the microwave?
Sure, we all love spaghetti, but short pasta types are best suited for microwave cooking. Think macaroni, fusilli and penne. Longer pasta types like fettucine can be cooked, but you will need a deeper and wider dish to ensure the pasta is completely submerged.
