Gluten-free Vegemite is here!

Happy little Vegemites, rejoice!

In Australia one in 70 people have Coeliac disease, a serious autoimmune condition triggered by an intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Until now, coeliac sufferers have been unable to enjoy the iconic taste of Australia: Vegemite.

A staple in many Aussie households, Vegemite has been spread on toast since 1923, and has since been reincarnated as a Shapes flavour and the perfect accompaniment to steak. And now, thanks to lots of research and product development, Vegemite can now be safely eaten by those suffering from a gluten intolerance, making them happy little Vegemites, indeed.

Bega Cheese, who bought the Vegemite brand from Mondelez International in 2017, has launched the first gluten-free version of Vegemite after requests were made for it by thousands of customers.

Vegemite marketing Manager Matt Gray told Australian Financial Review that the company had finally found a way to replace the key ingredient, which is brewer’s yeast (grown on barley and wheat), with a gluten0free baker’s yeast grown on molasses.

The brand new gluten-free Vegemite is available in all IGA stores, with plans to roll it out across the country in the coming weeks. The spread is FODMAP-friendly and Coeliac Australia approved.
