The humble sausage roll is something that many Aussies grew up eating. Whether it was homemade by your mum or bought from the tuck shop, a sausage roll with a generous dollop of tomato sauce is as Australian as a meat pie at the footy.

The Baking Association of Australia has done the hard work and crowned the winner of Australia’s Best Sausage Roll for 2023.
It’s an annual competition, and this year Banana Boogie Bakery in South Australia has won the grand title.
How Australia’s best sausage roll is judged
For most of us when it comes to the ultimate sausage roll, it’s strictly down to flavour. But to win this title, there’s quite the criteria that the judges are looking for.
This includes a shine and golden colour, ratio of meat and filling with a nice thin layer of pastry and to make sure there is no gap between the pastry and filling. Surprisingly, what might come as a shock to some is that judges taste the sausage rolls without the addition of tomato sauce.
Each sausage roll is given a score out of 60, with Banana Boogie achieving the highest.
