Composting is not a new concept – in fact, it dates all the way back to around 2300 BC. But, finding the best compost bin for your vegie scraps is a newer idea.
While many stick with the simple stationary compost, or just have a heap hidden away at the back of the garden, there are now many options on the market for quick, efficient composting. With worm composts, tumblers and indoor electric composts all competing for your attention, it can be hard to make the right choice.
We’re here to take you through all of the types of composting systems and help you work out which one is best for your waste.
2025’s top tumbling, stationary and worm compost bins

- Worm farm, $169, Maze (here’s why)
Types of compost bins
The type of compost bin you will choose depends on two elements of your lifestyle: how much time and space you have. Here are the most popular kinds of compost systems, and who suits each one best:
Tumbling compost
A tumbling or tumble compost is a suspended container that is able to be spun. When using a tumbling compost, you only need to turn it every so often, which will mix the composting materials. This will speed up the process of kitchen scraps turning into compost.
Best for: avid gardeners who need compost on hand at all times.
Stationary compost
A stationary compost is your regular composting system. Made of thermo-materials, it will look like a box or a large container in the back corner of your garden. While you may have to move the compost around within the container every so often, there are no other requirements for this system to work.
Best for: gardeners and eco-waste warriors who are short on time.
Worm compost
A worm farm, worm-based compost or vermicompost is exactly what it sounds like, a compost with an abundance of worms. When buying a worm compost, you’ll usually get the worms sent with the compost itself, sometimes with additional tools to help them thrive. A worm compost gives you very high quality compost from your kitchen scraps, and the perfect fertiliser for vegie patches. However, it does require a little more attention to keep the compost at the right temperature and dampness for the worms to stay alive.
Best for: vegie patch gardens and those happy to handle a couple of worms.
Indoor compost
An indoor compost is quite a new concept in the kitchen waste world. A smaller bin that’s placed inside with odourless capabilities and often electric or automatic to make the compost process quick and efficient. For those without a large enough outdoor space for a compost or not enough kitchen waste to warrant a big container, this is ideal.
Best for: apartments and those that don’t have a backyard.
Scrap bins and kitchen caddies
Vegie scrap bins or kitchen caddies are usually just for transferring waste from the kitchen into the garden. While these aren’t used for composting, the breaking down process can start in this vessel.
This makes it important to find a scrap bin that has a firm lid closure (to avoid pest infestations) and a material that doesn’t hold in odours.
