It can take a savoury dish from blah to brilliant and is a foundational ingredient in most baking recipes, so it makes sense that KitchenAid’s Colour of the Year 2025 pays homage to the deliciousness that is butter. KitchenAid Australia’s marketing director Rebecca Edwards explains that the butter yellow hue was designed to tap into our collective obsession with nostalgia and inspire us to create new memories. “It celebrates the joy of cooking with loved ones, evoking indulgent memories and inspiring makers to embrace and savour every moment in the kitchen,” she says.
The comforting, (dare we say, demure) pastel shade is a stark contrast to the brand’s Evergreen Stand Mixer (you know the one, the one with the matt army green stand and the wooden bowl) released in September 2024, which quickly sold out after going viral on TikTok. Be that as it may, butter yellow is a versatile colour that will look elegant perched on your kitchen bench and is a shade that has been proven to stand the test of time.
Prior to the Colour of the Year’s announcement, KitchenAid US teased four possible options for the top gong: silky chocolate brown (Pantone named a similar shade, ‘Mocha Mousse’ their 2025 Colour of the Year), energising butter yellow, dreamy strawberry pink and rich caramel brown. Brittni Pertijs, colour finish and material manager at Whirlpool says the reason butter ultimately won out is simple, “We knew we wanted the colour to feel like a warm embrace and compared to other colours, we found that yellow is significantly more likely to evoke feelings of warmth and joy.”
Meanwhile, KitchenAid devotees took to Reddit to speculate on what the colour might be, with one Redditor hoping for dove grey or lavender. Other guesses in a separate thread included beige and oatmeal.
