Method
Grease a 19cm square cake pan. Line base and sides with baking paper, extending paper 2cm above pan edges.
Put dark chocolate, condensed milk, butter and golden syrup in a saucepan on medium heat. Stir over heat for 5 minutes, or until melted and smooth. Cool for 2 minutes.
Combine biscuits and coconut in a large heatproof bowl. Mix in chocolate mixture to completely coat the biscuit mixture. Spoon into prepared pan, pressing well to compact. Cover. Refrigerate for 3 hours.
For Topping, put milk chocolate and butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%) for 1 minute, or until melted and smooth, stirring halfway through cooking. Pour over slice, spreading to level. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until set.
Remove slice from fridge 15 minutes before cutting into squares.
Where did hedgehog slice get its name?
The inspiration for the name of hedgehog slice actually comes from how it looks. The spikes of the chopped biscuit resemble the spikes of a hedgehog!
What is the difference between a brownie and a hedgehog?
A hedgehog slice contains a spiky biscuit inside with melted chocolate binding it together, while a brownie is made from scratch using flour, eggs, butter and cocoa.Â
