If you’re looking for a cookie recipe that’s different to your usual, this is the recipe for you. This inventive recipe was created by Fuzz Ali, who you might remember from My Kitchen Rules season 12, in 2022.
These kava and chocolate biscuits make a delicious festive treat, with the rich chocolate pairing with the earthy kava powder perfectly.
And, using the BHG Christmas cookie cutters, you can create cute cookies just like Fuzz has, decorating them with marbled fondant or the icing of your choosing!
Ingredients
Method
Beat cream, butter and sugar together until just creamy, not fluffy.
Add egg and vanilla. Mix until combined.
Combine dry ingredients. In a separate bowl whisk the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and sieved kava.
Add dry to wet. Add the dry mixture to the butter mixture and mix until a dough forms.
Fold in chocolate flecks. Add the finely chopped chocolate and fold through evenly.
Chill the dough. Divide into two discs, wrap, and chill for 1–2 hours.
Roll the dough to 6–8mm thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into Christmas shapes using Better Homes and Gardens cookie cutters before stamping with matching shapes.
Freeze the shapes. Place cut cookies on a tray and freeze for 10–15 minutes to prevent spreading.
Bake at 170°C fan (180°C conventional) for 8–12 minutes, until edges are set and centres look just firm.
Allow to cool fully before icing.

Kava is a psychoactive powder made from the ground root of Piper methysticum, which is a plant from the pepper family. It is most commonly used to make the drink Kava for South Pacific cultural ceremonies, including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu. This powder can make you feel relaxed and sleepy.
The best place to find authentic kava in Australia is by visiting a Fijian or South Pacific Islander market, where different kava types by country can be found. You can also buy kava powder online at supplement and health stores.
