But this latest hack involves something a little more…creepy crawly.
The latest tip from TikTok user @cicelylikeitaly involves everyone’s least favourite critter, the cockroach, and a vase to keep them at bay.
In the video, Cicely touts the benefits of placing a vase over the drain in your sink to inhibit the little creatures from climbing out when you go away for extended periods.
Does the vase trick for cockroaches work?
The jury is out on this one. On first looks, yes it will work to an extent because it blocks the entrance to the nasty germ carriers and limits their access to your home.
Although somewhat effective, it’s not a foolproof plan due to the fact it’s unlikely your drains are the only entrance points. So while it will block the unloved insects from entering through showers and sinks where covered, it isn’t going to keep your house completely pest free.
So, what can you do to keep cockroaches away?
The best way to keep cockroaches out of your drains is to keep them clean and damp. They can crawl up the drains because they are dry (hence why this tip is mentioned as a holiday trick). Running enough water through them each week means the creepy critters can’t grip as easily as they can on a dry drain.
Flushing your drains regularly with a drain cleaner to keep them clean and free from excess food and debris will limit their food source and stop attracting them.
And while it’s never a bad idea to block your drains to limit the little critters’ access to your bathroom or kitchen, you can save your vases for their intended purpose and just plug them with… you guessed it – a plug!
Of course, if you have a serious problem, then one of the best things you can do is to book a pest control professional to come and help you out.
