Everyone has a constant stream of consciousness flowing through their mind at any given time. Perhaps you’re thinking about a task at work, a family issue, or you’re simply having a good ol’ rant in your head about an annoying colleague. Whatever the topic, we can almost guarantee you’ve had an internal conversation with yourself about it.
However, science has proven that actually vocalising those thoughts, and speaking out loud to yourself, can have massive benefits.
In an interview with NBC, clinical psychologist Jessica Nicolosi explained that speaking out loud can force us to slow down our thoughts and process them differently.
“By talking to ourselves we become more deliberate, and this creates a slower process to think, feel and act, instead of being bombarded by our thoughts.”
This means we can work through tumultuous emotional issues better, and better work through present and future situations. And speaking positive affirmations about yourself out loud can also improve self esteem.
In this sense, talking to yourself while completing a task can help you get it done faster and better. In fact, a small study even found that talking to yourself out loud about your lost keys can help you find them quicker, while a 2007 study found that talking to yourself while studying, such as explaining a complex issue or task out loud, can actually cement your understanding of it better and improve learning.
So, next time you’re struggling to work through an issue or thought, try speaking it out loud. It’ll work wonders.
