How to unblock a badly blocked toilet
You will need:
- Rubber gloves
- Plunger
- Bucket
- A toilet auger or a plumbing snake
Method:
- Depending on the water level in your toilet, you might have to remove some of the water. Use a bucket to do this. This step is vital in preventing overflow during the unclogging process.
- Grab your plunger and position it over the drain hole at the bottom of the toilet bowl. Make sure it creates a tight seal. Apply downward pressure and vigorously plunge up and down 10 times. Repeat this process a few times.
- Pull the plunger out in one swift movement, then, gently flush the toilet to check if the blockage is cleared. If the water drains normally, the blockage is likely resolved. But if it doesn’t you can try a toilet auger or plumbing snake.
- Insert the flexible end of the plumbing snake into the drain and rotate the handle clockwise to grab whatever’s blocking your toilet. You might need to use a coathanger to fish out the blockage.
- Flush the toilet to see if all the blockage has been removed. If the issue is still not resolved, seek professional assistance from a plumber.
Expert tips:
- Before getting started, lay down a few old towels or newspaper around the toilet to catch any spills or splashes.
- Never use a plunger straight after a chemical drain treatment in case you splash yourself with harsh chemicals.
- Pop on some gloves for protection and hygiene.
