When’s the last time you slept in a bunkbed? Was it on school camp many years ago or a hostel in Europe? Well soon enough, you’ll be able to be bunking with your bestie on a plane.

Air New Zealand has just revealed its highly-anticipated sleep pods at TRENZ, a travel trade event in Christchurch.
Labelled the Skynest, it looks like a capsule hotel. The sleeping pods will consist of six bunk beds that can be booked for four hour slots. It’s a major win for premium and regular economy passengers who will now be able to lie down and enjoy a communal snooze during a long-haul flight.
How much will the Skynest cost?
A power nap in one of these pods will set you back around $500 AUD as an additional cost to your ticket.
Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty said they were still working through the details of how the booking process would work, and had yet to determine the exact price.
“At this stage we are looking at around $NZ400 to $500 ($A374-468) for the four-hour period,” she said.
Each pod will include a full-size pillow, sheets and blanket, ear plugs, a separate reading light, personal device USB outlet, ventilation outlet, and lighting designed for rest.
Will the Skynest on Air New Zealand be clean?
The pods are set to have a mattress and sheets which will be changed by cabin crew after each booking.
What flights can I expect the Skynest to be on?
Geraghty shared that the product would be launching on the airline’s Auckland to New York and Auckland to Chicago routes.
“North America is the perfect market for Skynest, as it has a premium segment that values comfort and sleep during long-haul travel,” she said.
Is the Skynest safe?
Each pod will come with a separate seatbelt to ensure passengers can fasten them and stay in the pod should the seat belt sign come on during turbulence.
How will it be managed?
Each passenger will be limited to one four-hour session for each flight. There will be a 30-minute buffer between each session that will allow for this. The lights will turn on at the end of the duration and passengers who are still asleep will be politely woken up at the end of their allocated slot.
What about families?
For families travelling on the same ticket, you will be able to book a session for each passenger, pending availability.
