Before and after: the secret to fluffing your Xmas tree

How to fluff a Christmas tree like a pro. - by Eunice Oh
  • 24 Nov 2021

Have you taken your Christmas tree out of the box and been disappointed with how slim it looks compared to the pictures online. Don't be alarmed, you haven't picked up the wrong tree or a faulty item. All you need to do is fluff the tree to get your artificial tree resembling the real deal.

Although we'd all love to have a real Christmas tree in our homes, if you want something you can pack away and use year after year, an artificial Christmas tree might be your best option.

You'll be surprised at how realistic they look, and all it takes is a bit of fluffing to get your own stunning tree in your home.

Amanda O'Sullivan, an interiors lover from the Kmart Inspired Homes Group on Facebook, shared how she transformed her skinny tree into a full and fabulous showstopper. Since sharing her before and after pictures on the page, the post has received a flood of interest and questions.

Many users were unaware that they needed to fluff a tree and were pleasantly surprised by the results.

Amanda shared "no special equipment is required, and an hour of fluffing is all you need to get your tree looking picture perfect."

When asked if there was a particular technique or method, Amanda said "the most important thing to remember is that the tips should be going in all different directions. If you point them all the same way, that's how you get gaps and can see straight through to the trunk. By alternating the way you point the tips, you fill in all gaps and it gives a much more natural look."

For beginners who haven't fluffed their tree before, even getting started can be quite daunting. We asked Amanda if she had any tips or tricks.

  • Take your time and do the fluffing properly. It is a tedious process, but if you start with a good base, the finished decorated product will look a lot better.
  • Start fluffing from the bottom. It's a lot easier to see that way.
  • It's essential to take a step back and look at the tree as a whole to see if you have missed any spots and rearrange any sections as needed.
