Winged fairies, squirrels, bunnies and singing bluebirds call this rustic watering can and surrounding garden their home.
Add plants on each side of the pathway so the fairy garden journey from the welcome sign to the front door is an absolute joy.
How to make a watering can fairy garden
Gather your supplies
- Bowl-shaped terracotta plant pot, about 26cm x 46cm-dia or similar
- Potting mix, quantity to suit
- Trowel (optional)
- Assorted plants, such as succulents
- Assorted miniature accessories, such as a teapot cottage, curvy pathway, fencing, bunny characters (including a bunny on a log reading a book), a ’Welcome‘ sign, lampposts and fairy figurine.
- Small white pebbles, quantity to suit
- Spray bottle or small spout watering can
Here’s how:
STEP 1 Fill plant pot with potting mix, 5-6cm below top of the pot, or just below the rim of pot. Level out the surface of soil.
STEP 2 Using trowel or hands, dig a small hole to one side of pot and put first plant in position.
STEP 3 Taking into account the final position of the watering-can house, gate and pathway, use trowel or hands to dig 2 more holes toward front edge of pot, 1 on each side. Put a spillover plant in posiiton in each hole so that it can grow down the edges of the pot. Press potting mix around plants to secure them in position. Level out surface of soil.
STEP 4 Put watering-can house on top of soil, in the clearing at the back of the pot. Adjust until it’s sitting level.
STEP 5 Place curvy pathway in clearing betwen the 2 front plants, leading from front of pot to the doorway of watering-can house.
STEP 6 If you have space, dig a small hole and put a low plant plant in the gap between first plant and the watering-can house. Press potting mix around base of plant to secure it in position.
STEP 7 Put a length of fencing towards back of pot, between watering-can home and first plant. Spike the fencing into the soil hard against the edge of the pot for best effect.
STEP 8 Position another length of fencing on other side of watering-can home, hard against the edge of the pot. You may need to adjust the spillover plant so that it falls over or between the gaps in the fence.
STEP 9 Pour a small amount of white pebbles in the clearing between the pathway and the front of the pot.
STEP 10 Use your hands to gently level and compact the pebbels into a neat landing in front of the pathway.
STEP 11 Put bunny on a stump reading a book figurine to one side of pathway, near front of pot. Tuck other bunny characters in clearings toward back of pot, on each side of watering-can house.
STEP 12 Spike ‘Welcome‘ sign into soil, towards front of pathway and so that pathway is centred to sign.
STEP 13 Put lampposts in various positions throughout garden scene, including around base of ’Welcome‘ sign and tucked into foliage, too.
STEP 14 Spike fairy figurine into one of the spillover plants at front of pot.
STEP 15 Water plants lightly, as required, using spray bottle or watering can
