The best part is it’s so versatile you can eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Or all three if you fancy.

How to make the perfect toastie

It turns out the secret to the best-tasting cheese toasty is simpler than you think, and it has nothing to do with the type of cheese you use (although that can help).

After cooking, all you have to do is sprinkle a little salt on the outside of of the bread and you're on your way to eating the tastiest toastie ever.

Why you should add salt to your cheese toastie

Cheese is renowned for its umami flavour, often described as a savory taste sensation. When combined with a pinch of salt, the umami in cheese is intensified, creating a more pronounced and enjoyable flavour.

How much salt?

How much salt you add to your cheese toastie is a personal choice. In saying that, it's important to sprinkle in moderation. Over-salting can mask some of the subtler flavours of the cheese and other ingredients you’ve added to your toasted sandwich. Experiment with small amounts and adjust according to taste.

What is the best cheese for toasties?

If you do want to up your toastie game, Better Homes and Gardens food editor Sarah Murphy says: "The best cheese for toastie is a combination of cheddar and gruyere or swiss.

"If you like that melted cheese pull factor add some mozzarella in as well."

As for Sarah's favourite toastie combination?

"My favourite toastie is the classic (perhaps daggy) ham, cheese and semi-dried tomato," says Sarah.

"I make sure to add cheese is on both the top and base layer so it melts to both slices of bread and sticks the whole sandwich together. But of course beware the molten hot toastie centre straight out of the sandwich press or jaffle maker.

"Patience is your friend once your toastie is cooked, so be sure to leave it alone for a few minutes to cool slightly before tucking in."
