The low-maintenance guide to getting your backyard summer-ready

From smarter pool cleaning to intelligent lawn irrigation, here's how to spend less time on maintenance and more time enjoying summer.

A collective sigh seems to echo when the warmer weather arrives. The days are longer, flowers begin to bloom, and our backyards come to life again. But with all that comes another familiar feeling: the realisation that there is now a whole lot more outdoor maintenance to do.

From keeping the lawn green and the garden watered, to making sure the pool is ready for an impromptu dip, the list of summer chores can add up.  Here are five easy ways to get your backyard summer-ready, with less upkeep and leaving you more time to enjoy your outdoor space.

1.Lawn love

Lawn lovers might enjoy spending their evenings watering and tending to the grass, but for the average household, finding the time (or remembering to turn on the sprinkler) can be another story. Thankfully, there’s no harm in handing over the responsibility to something with a little more finesse.

Enter Aiper Irrisense Smart N2 SE smart irrigation system. This clever 3-in-1 lawn watering system combines a controller, sprinkler and electric valve in one compact device, helping take the mental load out of maintaining a healthy lawn – and helping households to be water wise.

Through the Aiper app, you can take a hands-off approach as it maps up to six watering zones and creates customised schedules. The EvenRain technology mimics natural rainfall for more even watering. It also adapts to changing weather conditions, helping prevent unnecessary watering when rain is forecasted. The result? A greener lawn with less effort, and potential water savings of up to 40 per cent, depending on your yard, weather and usage.

2.Low-fuss plants

Before summer hits, take stock of plants that might need extra attention as temperatures rise. If you’re refreshing your garden, consider hardy, drought-tolerant varieties such as succulents and jade plants, which require less frequent watering once established. Group them in pots or garden beds for an easy, low-maintenance update.

For existing gardens, one of the simplest things you can do is add mulch. A layer of wood chips or sugarcane mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, meaning less time watering and pulling out unwanted growth.

3.Pool prep

Owning a pool is one of summer’s great pleasures but keeping it sparkling can quickly eat into your weekends.  Between skimming leaves, scrubbing walls and cleaning the waterline, there’s plenty to stay on top of before anyone even jumps in.

This is where smart technology can take some of the hard work off your hands. The Aiper Experts Duo pairs two specialised robots to tackle pool cleaning from top to bottom: the cordless Scuba V3 smart robotic pool cleaner and the solar-powered EcoSurfer S2 surface skimmer.

While the Scuba V3 gets to work using AI vision and VisionPath technology to clean the pool floor, walls and waterline, hands-free, the EcoSurfer S2 moves across the surface collecting leaves and floating debris before they have a chance to sink. Using SolarSeeker solar technology to seek sunlight and recharge when its battery runs low, the EcoSurfer S2 continues to skim with less manual intervention. Working together, the hands-free team maintains your pool at any hour of the day, so you and your family get a swim-ready pool every day of summer without lifting a pole or emptying a basket. Less admin, more summering.

You’ll still need to keep up with your regular water testing and chemical balancing, but if it can take the cleaning away that’s one less thing on the summer chore list.

4.Effortless entertaining

Give your outdoor entertaining area a quick seasonal refresh with a few clever swaps. If you have a removable firepit, consider swapping it for an outdoor coffee table to make the space more functional during summer.

A large outdoor umbrella is a great addition to help shade entertaining spaces if they’re in direct sunlight and for when dusk falls, solar-powered festoon lights help continue your entertaining into the evening. These simple updates mean your yard is ready to entertain without hours of last-minute prep.

5. Bugs-away

Nothing interrupts a barbecue quite like uninvited pests – hello Bogong moths, mosquitos, ants and flies. Fortunately, a little preparation can help keep them under control.

For pesky flies, forget the bug spray and consider growing fragrant herbs such as basil, rosemary and mint near your entertaining area. Flies hate fresh smells so pungent herbs are perfect partners in helping to keep them at bay. Plus, they complement a summer menu perfectly – the ultimate double duty update.

For mosquitoes, remove standing water from pots, buckets and other containers where they can breed, and keep a refillable outdoor repellent handy for evenings outside that you can top up without the need to light mosquito coils or clean them up afterwards. As for ants, remember they’re often beneficial to the garden. If they become a problem around entertaining areas, targeted ant baits can help manage unwanted colonies.
