Study finds swearing at work can be good for your career

How do you feel about workplace profanity? - by Laura Barry

Study finds swearing at work can be good for your career

Swearing at work can be a divisive topic. Some people maintain that true professionalism requires impeccable manners and a polite demeanour, while others prefer a more relaxed approach to office dialogue and are comfortable with the occasion cuss word. However, recent scientific research now suggests that not only is swearing in the workplace okay, but it can be good for your career.

The Facts

Science Alert first reported that swearing appears to be a language tool that an articulate person can use to communicate with maximum effectiveness.

Furthermore, a study conducted at the private research school University of Rochester in New York found that intelligent people are more likely to be potty-mouthed and published their findings in the Official Journal of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences.

So not only are people who swear intelligent and good communicators, but AFR reports that swearing can also make an employee appear more honest, credible and persuasive.

The anecdotal evidence

An experiment conducted in 2007 found that swearing at work can also strengthen friendships between employees. To test the theory, a researcher went undercover as a worker at a British mail-order warehouse. He was initially excluded from the social group in the office, but things changed after he swore at another employee, suggesting it can help new employees fit in.

So, should you be compelled to drop the f-bomb when dealing with a particularly disagreeable printer, feel free to do so.
