But some people don't have that luxury. If you're allergic to mosquito bites or the repellents on the market, irritate your skin. Or perhaps you're like my son, who gets eaten alive just stepping outside the door, and you need constant bug protection. That is where the beauty of a mosquito-repellent blanket comes in.
I tried Outer's Bug Shield Blanket on a recent camping trip, and it's now a bedroom staple in my son's room that provides protection from mozzies and other bugs all night long.
Outer Bug Shield Blanket, $105 (usually $150)
What is it
How does a blanket repel bugs? Outer's Bug Shield blanket protects you from pesky bugs like mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies - you name a bug, and it will repel it. It’s infused with a natural mosquito repellent, permethrin, found in plants like chrysanthemums, so it’s safe for the whole family.
Here’s what happened
Despite being coated in insect repellent, this blanket (made from 100% recycled materials), is ridiculously soft and doesn't smell. We sat with this blanket over our legs at dusk and wrapped it around our shoulders. Once my son was asleep, I would place it over him, so he had mozzie protection that lasted through the night. (It was lightweight enough to use in summer too). It's safe to say no bugs were paying us a visit at night.
Most mozzie repellents have a shelf life. You either have to reapply after a few hours, or they become less effective over time. That's not the case with the Bug Proof Blanket. It's a blanket. You carry it around with you, and you're covered.
In saying that, the repellent on the blanket won't last forever, and Outer says it should last for about 25 washes. But when you think about how often you wash a blanket, this should last you a while. If you wash it, the care instructions recommend washing it separately, either by hand or in your washing machine (do not dry clean).
If you're looking for an alternative to smelly, sticky insect repellents, Outer's Bug Shield Blanket is it!
- Made from recycled materials
- Doesn't smell
- Protection lasts longer than other repellents
- Repellent won't last forever - but it will last for at least 25 washings.
If you're looking for an alternative to smelly, sticky insect repellents, this is it. It's versatile enough to use indoors and out and comes in a couple of different patterns. Even though our camping trip is over, we’ve kept the blanket in my son’s bedroom for some added bug protection.
