Buy yourself more leave
Research shows that in 2018 50.5 per cent of the Australian work force worked as full-time employees, making it the most popular option for Aussie workers. However, some businesses have the option of ‘purchasing’ annual leave. Purchased leave is where employees take an additional four weeks leave per year by adjusting their salary to 48 weeks paid over the full 52 weeks. This way you can take extra days off, extra time off, or have more long weekends.
Work from home
Working from home doesn’t necessarily mean working less, but if you could negotiate one work from home day a week with your manager, you may find yourself saving time and money when it comes to commuting, eating out and other little costs that crop up. Not to mention, working from home means you could start work earlier as you aren’t sitting on a train or driving your car on a commute. That means you can finish earlier!
According to AI Research Group data, 31 per cent of Australia’s work force in 2018 was part-timer employees. If you’re really struggling against the 5-day work week, then knocking one day off your week and going part-time, 4 days a week, might be the answer for you. An extra day at home doesn’t necessarily mean a large loss of money. An extra day a week might give you more time to meal-prep, to shop around for bargains, rather than paying a higher price for convenience, and free up money that may have previously gone towards child care or even before and after school care.
