Ilnyckyj realised that there was a special reason behind the placement of corks. The cork or corks would act as a safety measure under the handle of saucepan lids in Japanese kitchens as they would never heat up. So instead of grabbing the metal handle directly, chefs could safely pinch the cork instead. This clever trick was also a great time saver as it would reduce the time spent putting an oven mitt on and off.
After trying and testing the kitchen hack for himself, Ilnyckyj found that sparkling wine corks worked best as they wedge under handles more easily than other varieties.
