How to bake the best ever cake

By simply following the five simple tips below, you’ll be baking with success every time – no more burnt, sunken or overflowing cakes.

And once you've mastered the baking basics, check out our guidelines on how to make a moist cake.

1. Be prepared

Always read the recipe from beginning to end before you start cooking.

2. Level it

Measure your ingredients accurately, ensuring all measures are level.

3. Measure up

Use standard metric measurements:

1 teaspoon (tsp) = 5ml

1 tablespoon (Tbsp) = 20ml

1 cup liquid = 250ml

Here are a few other handy conversions:

4 tsp = 1 Tbsp

3 Tbsp = ¼ cup

4. Be scientific

Baking is a science, so follow the recipe method exactly.

5. Set the temperature

Preheat your oven accurately to the correct temperature, according to the type of oven you have. If a recipe gives a fan-forced temperature, add 20 degrees for a conventional oven.
