How to perfect your blush application in 6 easy steps

There's an art to getting your rouge right. - by Annie Millar

How to perfect your blush application in 6 easy steps

Blush is the key to a flawless face. A subtle touch of pink or peach on the cheeks can take a dull complexion and make it feel fresh and radiant. Even if you only wear minimal makeup, blush should still play a role in your daily makeup ritual. Even if you think you’ve mastered the art of blush, check out the following tips, you might just find there’s room for improvement.

Prep your skin

The first thing you must do before applying makeup of any sort is to take care of your skin. All forms of skin coverage, whether it’s a foundation, BB cream or blush are meant to enhance your complexion and they work best when the skin is clean and hydrated.

Pick your shade

A blush is meant to mimic the way your face looks when you have a natural flush of colour. Choose a shade that matches your skin’s natural under tone (warm or cool), so it works in harmony with your complexion. The wrong shade will look unnatural.

As a general rule cooler tones, such a pinks and mauves are best suited for women with a cool or rosey skin tone. Warmer shades such as coral are best suited to those with a warm, golden or olive skin tone. When a shade is right it will blend with your natural colouring. When a shade is clearly visible against your skin it’s too dark. If it doesn’t feel right to you it probably isn’t so try another shade. If in doubt try a powder blush palette which will give you multiple shades to swirl a brush over.

Keep it subtle

Blush should uplift your complexion without standing out like eyeshadow or lipstick. It should give a glow to your cheeks without having any obvious edges and it definitely shouldn’t continue off into your hair line at the sides.

Not too low

Blush is not for contouring your cheeks, but rather for highlighting them. Start applying it at the height of the apples on your cheeks and blend it up and back towards the sides of your face. If in doubt, smile, but if you’re a mature woman keep in mind your cheeks may sit lower than they once did so work your magic a little higher.

Don’t skip blush.

When you’re applying a full makeup, including foundation, wearing blush is a given as you need to add colour to your now blank cheeks. But even when you’re wearing only lippy and a lick of mascara it’s blush that will lift and brighten your complexion.

Powder or cream?

Powder blush can accentuate wrinkles, if you have any, so your choice of powder or cream blush will partly depend on your age. A cream blush always looks more natural and blends seamlessly into your skin. As a bonus some can also be used to add a touch of colour to your lips.
