But that all changed last week while shopping in my local fruit shop. I noticed a shelf dedicated to natural cleaning products and, of course, had to try some. The best of the bunch was a non-toxic cleaning product that has been around for decades: Bon Ami Powder Cleanser.
First, I used Bon Ami to clean about two years of scum from the food catcher in my kitchen sink, and it was love at first sprinkle. After following the instructions, I grabbed a microfibre cloth, and the gunk came right off. My only regret is that I didn't take a 'before' picture, so you can see the difference. My stainless steel sink is sparkling!
Next, I tackled the bath. This usually involves me getting fully naked, opening all of the windows and dousing the tub in bleach before trying to vigorously clean the soap scum. Today, I kept my clothes on, sprinkled my magic powder around, and added a few water splashes. Without straining a single muscle in my body, I casually wiped away the grime.
Another huge pro is the price. A tin of Bon Ami will set you back around $5.95 for a 400g. The company decided to forgo a lid to keep the costs down, which is one of the reasons why this product has stayed so affordable. Just pop some tape over the holes or a put a sandwich bag over the top with an elastic band.
I've since used it to clean burnt pants and a dirty stove after my spaghetti Bolognaise erupted everywhere. Bon Ami passed all of the tests with flying colours.
While Bon Ami is great for cleaning sinks, baths, pots, pans and more, it's still an abrasive cleaner (not as abrasive as others, but something to keep in mind). So it's not suitable for windows, mirrors and glass. Another thing to note is that while it's excellent at removing dirt and grime, it's not antimicrobial, so it won't kill bacteria. Despite this, Bon Ami exceeded all my cleaning expectations.
And I told all my friends about it.
Summary
- Features: Non-toxic
- Price: $5.95
- Pros: Effortlessly wipes away dirt, grease, grime
- Cons: Isn’t antimicrobial but still does a top job!
