These '90s toys are now worth hundreds of dollars

These '90s toys are now worth hundreds of dollars

Very few of us kept tabs on what happened to all our childhood toys, but if you are one of the few who did, then you could be in for a treat.

Classic toys such as Barbie items, Nintendo gaming consoles and Polly Pocket products are now being sold online for hundreds of dollars, their values skyrocketing as they move from ‘old toys’ to bona fide vintage status.

Unfortunately, not just any old toy will do. You’ll need to be in possession of special edition or limited edition products, or products that achieved cult status at the time of sale, but are few and far between these days. You’ll also need to make sure your toys are in good to mint condition. For gaming consoles, you’ll need to ensure the consoles are still in working order.

Barbie

Limited edition and classic Barbie products can be worth a pretty penny to the right collector. For example, the Karl Lagerfeld Barbie doll is now worth US$3475.

Original vintage Barbie dolls in their boxes can go for upwards of $5000, and Barbie dolls such as the Sleeping Beauty Collector’s Edition doll in the box fetches up to $1794.

Nintendo 64

A Nintendo 64 gaming console in mint condition can sell for more than $2000 online, while rare Nintendo 54 gaming cartridges, such as Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Collectors Edition can fetch $2000, if in mint condition.

Meanwhile, your average second hand good condition Nintendo 64 console, controller and a gaming cartridge are sold for upwards of US$150, while individual game cartridges such as Yoshi’s Story, Donkey Kong and Super Mario can get $30 a pop.

Polly Pocket

Many 90s babies will remember having a Polly Pocket toy, and these little treasures re still sold online for $20-$50 in second hand condition. However, for anyone who kept their Polly Pocket in mint condition, or has a still-sealed pre-Mattel edition, you could be sitting on a small goldmine. A sealed 1996 Polly pocket toy can be worth up to $2000, while a 1992 Partytime Party Stamper Polly Pocket – no box – can be worth $700.

Furby

Although not quite the lucrative toys as Barbie or Nintendo, Furby has also become something of a collector’s item. Star Wars Furby editions can fetch up to $299, while an original 1998 Furby in its box can go for up to $300.

Cabbage Patch Kids

Cabbage Patch Kids made their way into the arms of many young children in the 90s, and if you happen to still have a doll new in its box complete with ‘birth certificate’, you might be able to make up to $200 by selling it.

Beanie Kids

These cuddly little teddy bears came in all sorts of themes and costumes, and weren’t particularly expensive to buy. However, should you happen to find that you still have G’Day the Aussie Bear or Comet the Reindeer Bear with tags in mint condition, you could sell them for around $400 each.
