Transform your bathroom in a weekend

You may think that the only way you can improve the look of your bathroom is to do a full-on reno. - by Better Homes and Gardens

Transform your bathroom in a weekend
Chris Jones

The truth is there are some simple ways to give your bathroom an update and it doesn’t have to take forever either! Here are 5 simple ways you can transform your bathroom in just a weekend.

Get out the paintbrush

The easiest way to brighten up your bathroom is with a fresh coat of paint. You can take the opportunity to totally change the colour for a whole new look but even repainting in a similar colour will be a big improvement. If you’ve got any mould, kill it using a weak bleach solution, rinse, then paint over it with a stain-blocking sealer before your final coats. Choose a paint that’s specially designed for bathrooms. It’s hard wearing to take the humid environment and has mould inhibitors to help prevent its growth.

Swap the shower screen

The shower screen is one of the biggest features of your bathroom so changing your old one over for something a bit more modern will have a massive impact. The best thing is you can do it yourself and save loads of money. There are a huge range of shower screens in different sizes colours, shapes and styles to suit most situations so you’re sure to find one for your bathroom.

Update the fixtures

Old style taps can be updated to something a bit more modern without having to call a plumber in. Unscrew the cap off the top, usually with the H or C on it, then pull off the handle and the spindle cover below it. Take these with you when you go shopping so you get new ones that fit. Pop these back over the tap spindles, screw the cap back on and you’ve got an instant update. Showerheads and bath spouts are usually just screwed into fittings fixed into the walls so they can simply be unscrewed and the new ones screwed back on.

Re-accessorise

Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. Accessories like towel rail, toilet roll holders and soap dishes are easy to replace. When you’re choosing new ones just make sure they are the same size and will cover all the screw holes left by the old ones. Again take them with you when you go to buy.

Replace the grout

...

When retiling isn’t an option, re-grouting is the next best thing. Clean, fresh grout around your tiles will give them a lift and improve the look of your whole bathroom. You can go with a grout that’s similar to the old stuff or try a contrasting colour that will highlight the lines of your tiles. To do it, Grab a grout rake and scrape out the first 5 or so millimetres of grout. Remove all the dust, mix the new grout and spread it over the tiles, getting right into the joins. Clean off excess with a sponge and polish the tiles once it’s dried. Beautiful!
