A standing desk is the key to a longer life

According to research by Deakin University. - by Laura Barry
  • 14 Aug 2018

An Australian study conducted by Deakin University that analysed more than 230 desk-based workers has found that sit-stand desks are a cost-effective way for employers to improve the health of their workforce, and help them live longer lives.

Obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease have all been linked to sitting all day, and according to this study, standing desks could help save 7,492 ‘health-adjusted life years’ by preventing these diseases.

The study also found that regular exercise will not overcome the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, and that 45 per cent of Australian workers spend most of their day sitting at a desk, meaning the implementation of sit-stand desks could improve the health of almost half of all Australian workers.

“Adopting this workplace intervention also has the potential to reduce absenteeism and improve productivity,” says lead researcher Dr Lan Gao. “The introduction of sit-stand desks, alongside associated supports, is a cost-effective and innovative way to promote the health of Australia’s workforce.”

Tips for staying healthy when you sit at a desk

  • Take hourly breaks
  • Stretch or move in place
  • Take your meetings on the move, like going for a walk.
  • Visit your colleagues to ask questions, rather than emailing or calling them.
  • Walk on your lunch break
