How to revamp your home's façade

Easy ideas to make a lasting impression. - by Better Homes and Gardens & Bunnings

How to revamp your home's façade

First impressions count, and none more so than your home’s front facade. An appealing exterior can set the tone for what’s inside, not to mention make your heart sing each time you arrive home.

The best news? Giving your facade a facelift is easier than you might think. From repainting the existing brickwork to giving your garden some love or replacing some light fittings, there are plenty of simple changes you can tackle yourself, often within the space of a weekend.

BHG has teamed up with Bunnings to bring you the best ideas from its Make It Happen series, in which the team helps renovation rookies transform their homes. In Episode 3, the team make some simple improvements to an outdated facade, helping homeowner Lisa fall in love with her home all over again. Here are five simple ideas for reviving your own home’s entrance.

1. Get painting

Nothing transforms a tired, outdated facade like a fresh coat of paint. It will add instant value to your home and is a great way to highlight architectural features or hide imperfections.

The colour you choose depends entirely on taste and the look you’re after. For example, whites and greys create a French farmhouse, Hamptons look. You might like to take a look at houses around your neighbourhood for inspiration.

Choose paint products designed for outdoor use and consider using a spray gun for faster application. Don’t forget to repaint the gutters and trims in a contrasting shade.

2. Update your front door

While you’ve got the paint brushes out, why not paint your front door? It’s a quick and easy trick that will bring a nice splash of personality to your home.

Black is a popular choice, while pastel pinks, blues and greens, and brighter shades of yellow, green or purple are also having a moment. Be adventurous! Finish the look with a new doorknob or handle.

3. Add some greenery

Potted colour, a few raised garden beds or a creeping vine climbing up the wall; whatever it is, introducing lush greenery to the front of your home will add layers of colour, height and depth, and help it look lived in and ‘finished’.

Aim for a mix of grasses, shrubs and trees for a naturally layered look, opting for low-maintenance varieties and timed watering systems if you’re time poor.

4. Make some simple style updates

If the thought of painting for days or using power tools doesn’t appeal, there are lots of simple and cost-effective ways to improve the look and feel of your facade.

We’re talking new light fittings, a state-of-the-art doorbell, chic new house numbers, a replacement mailbox, or a characterful doormat.

5. Don’t forget somewhere to sit

Make the most of your newly improved front yard and entrance with a patio or deck, where you can sit with a cuppa or a book and just be amongst it all.

For this home makeover, the front porch was extended with easy-to-install modular decking, which was whitewashed to match the paintwork. You can jazz up an existing patio with a table and chairs, bench seat or swing, some cushions and throws and a couple of outdoor lanterns.
