Plants that could cause problems in your backyard

Not all plants are created equal.

According to garden experts, there are certain varieties that should be used with caution or avoided altogether.

"You need to be careful of any of the ficus varieties which have very vigorous root systems and like to go looking for water,” Director of Sydney-based landscape design and construction firm Secret Gardens Matt Cantwell told Domain.

Additionally, these types of plants, with large roots, should be kept away from pools as they can cause a massive amount of damage.

"Trees like alders and liquid ambers would also be an extremely poor choice, we strongly recommend not to use those near pools," Melbourne-based horticulturist and landscape designer Lisa Ellis told the publication.

Another thing to think about is how high the plants will grow.

"If you’re going to plant anything that’s going to get to a decent height, you need to consider how you’re constructing your garden, the structural elements, and ensure that it’s engineered accordingly," said Matt.

If in doubt, consult an expert.
