Are you in or out? - by Aaron Clayton

Kitchen and bathroom rugs

The newest trend in rugs is here, and it may not be what you expect. According to Instagram and Pinterest feeds, the latest design craze is decorating bathrooms and kitchens with rugs. Yes, rugs. From a design perspective, it is picture perfect – textural patterned elements that soften hard and shiny surfaces. However, in practice, do rugs really belong in the kitchen and bathroom?

We weigh in by listing the pros and cons.

Weekend what did you do to me? I drank way too much 🍷 , ate a pastrami and pickle toasted sandwich 🥪, felt violently ill, fell asleep like a nana at 8pm, spent all of Sunday watching Sense8 on Netflix while stuffing my face with recovery chocolate 🍫 . I have nothing to give you Insta fam. Nothing at all. Except a Netflix recommendation 👏🏻👏🏻 Sense8 is the reason I won't post on Insta for the next few weeks or cook in this kitchen. Kids it's Uber eats until I finish the series 😂 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #kitchendesign #mybohotribe #myhometrend #houseplantclub #showusyourhygge #kitchen #mycollecteddecor #idrinkandigrowthings #greatthingscometothosewhothrift #mybohovibes #mybohemianabode #boldbohemians #bohemiandecor #bohemianliving #rugmadetheroom #mumlife #mysouthwesternbohome #bohoismyjam #beautifullyboho #apartmenttherapy #interiors4all #stellarspaces #plantsmakepeoplehappy #styleithappy #mybotanicalbungalow #showmeyourboho #originmagazine #broughttoyoubythrifting #planteriordesign

PRO: Great to stand on!

There will always be occasions that mean spending WAY too much time in the kitchen. Whether it’s preparing for Christmas day or having to remake the dinner you accidentally burnt (don’t worry, we have all been there), it’s an inevitable part of being a home cook. Hard flooring like granite or tile can be uncomfortable to stand on for long periods of time. Rugs can help by providing a small amount of cushioning, giving you more time to cook up a storm.

CON: Watch your step

As beautiful as they look, loosely woven rugs are unavoidable trip hazards. Their tendency to curl, scrunch or shuffle around is what we love about them, however maybe not the best underfoot when carrying hot pots and sharp objects. Avoid kitchen disasters by opting for a durable polypropylene rug that is designed not to budge. Safety first, choose a rug that won't catch you out!

CON: Is it clean?

When “rugs” and “bathrooms” are uttered in the same sentence, the question of hygiene is sure to pop up. Same goes in the kitchen. We already mentioned these are wet zones, and this is no lie. Sauces, milk, red wine, cleaning products, soaps are all going to end up embedded within these rugs, right? Correct. Opt for a material that is stain resistant. Or if you're not brave enough to try a soft pile, wooden rugs are a great alternative.

PRO: Looks fantastic!

Whether you’re in or out, there is no denying the charm of this new trend. Oriental designs act as colourful ornaments, seagrass weaves add beach house cred, and chunky sisal rugs ooze texture and personality. Do your research and consider all the elements and your space could be just one rug away from being Pinterest-worthy.

So, what's your verdict?
