Over time, you’ll find your scissors will become dull and blunt. But you don’t need to rush out and buy a new pair or pay somebody to sharpen them for you. Just sharpen them with one of these three common items found in the home. Here’s how.

aluminium

Method 1

Method 1: Aluminium foil

Pull a layer of aluminium foil out of the roll and fold several times (approximately seven layers should do the trick). Cut through the foil and make long skinny strips, ensuring as much of the blade makes contact with the foil. Continue cutting several strips. When you have finished, give the blades a wipe with damp, paper towel.

sandpaper

Method 2

Method 2: Sandpaper

Grab a sheet of sandpaper (150-200 grit works well). Fold it in half, with the rough surface facing outwards, as you want the sandpaper to make contact with both blades. Start cutting long skinny strips, ensuring as much of the blade makes contact with the sandpaper. Continue cutting several strips. When you have finished, give the blades a wipe with damp, paper towel to remove any dust etc.

steel wool

Method 3: Steel wool

Take the steel wool and the pair of scissors to a sink or somewhere easy to clean up the tiny steel wool offcuts. Start cutting into the steel wool with the scissors for about a minute. When you have finished, wipe the scissors down with damp, paper towel.
