If left to their own devices, bananas will ripen on their own. But if you’re in a hurry for the sweet taste of banana bread, you will need to speed up the process.
While adding bananas to a paper or plastic bag and letting them sit somewhere warm will help hurry things along, there’s a faster way: the oven or air fryer.
Note: if your bananas are green, the oven method won’t work, and you’ll have to pop them in a bag and wait until they turn yellow.
So how do you ripen bananas quickly? Taking to TikTok to share a very handy banana tip, @kalejunkie shows us how she ripens her bananas in minutes.
Her method involves popping the firm, yellow bananas in the oven unpeeled and baking them for 5 minutes at around 200°C. Just be careful you don’t burn them.
Cooking at a lower heat of around 150°C for longer will also work. Once the bananas are blackened and soft to the touch, they’re ready to bake.
Her followers love this tip, with many thanking her for sharing.
“One of my favourite tips,” wrote one person.
Another added: “Love doing this so delicious love the Carmel taste 🥰! I need banana bread in my life.”
How to ripen bananas fast in your air fryer
If you’re addicted to cooking with an airfryer, don’t stop now. Place your unpeeled bananas on a lined tray, and pop them in your air fryer. Preheat to around 150 and cook for 8 or 9 minutes.
Similar to cooking in the oven, once the skin is black and the flesh soft, your bananas are ready to be baked.
