How to make a coat rack with Tara

It costs less than $50 to make! - by Tara Dennis
  • 13 May 2022

Speaking of inspiration from unlikely places, Tara’s sharing a design for a cool coat rack that was inspired by a game we all played as kids: pick-up sticks! She’s using broom handles to create a freestanding coat rack that’s renter and budget-friendly, costing less than 50 bucks to make.

Gather your supplies

  • Wooden paint poles or broom handles 25mm dia. (4)
  • Primer
  • Low-sheen acrylic paint in pink and grey
  • Cotton sash cord

You’ll also need

Painter’s tape; scissors; paintbrushes; hot-glue gun and glue sticks; felt feet; rubber bands

For you to note

  • Look for paint poles with a metal screw thread, as they can double as the feet for the coat rack.
  • Sketch your design before masking off the poles.

Here’s how

Step 1 Use tape to mask off the sections of the poles that are to be painted.

Step 2 Using a paintbrush, apply primer to sections to be painted and leave to dry.

Step 3 Apply 2 coats of acrylic paint to masked-off sections, leaving to dry after each coat.

Painting timber poles

Step 4 Remove tape from poles while paint is still slightly tacky.

Step 5 Wrap screw threads with cord, securing with dabs of hot glue as you go. Attach cord end with glue and trim excess.

STEP 6 Attach felt furniture feet to base of screw threads.

Tying rope around timber poles

STEP 7 Gather poles together and use rubber bands to hold them, making sure ends are flush. Wrap sash cord around the poles about 40mm from the top, tie off and trim ends. Remove rubber bands.

STEP 8 Splay poles so feet are in a square formation and position upright.

Soft pastels and natural timber give this coat rack a scandi vibe – or take your colour cues from your deco scheme.
