How to cope with a pet shedding their winter coat

Handy tips. - by Laura Barry
  • 24 Sep 2018

Summer is a time when we abandon all our winter layers and bask in the sunlight that our sunburnt country is famous for.  Summer is a time for outdoor entertaining, barbecues, beach trips and... cleaning up pet hair.

As the weather warms up many cats and dogs will shed their winter coats, and if your pet spends a lot of time inside, you’ll soon be finding tufts of fur collecting on your furniture, floor and rugs.

Here are a few handy tips to help you get through this fluffy time.

1. Groom your pets often

As the mercury starts to climb, your best defence is a good offense. Brush long-haired pets every day, and pets with short hair every two to three days to capture the fur that would otherwise fall on your furniture. Once summer is n full swing, give your pet a thorough bath with shampoo, and wear rubber gloves while you wash them to loosen up as much fur as possible. Then let them run wild and free in the sun to dry off.

Consider getting your pet’s fur clipped by a professional if you live in a warm area.

2. Create a designated free-fur-all

To keep the fur-fallout to a minimum inside the home, ensure your pet has a designated sleep or snuggle space that they know is theirs. Making sure you pet is sleeping in thier own bed and relaxing on their designated part of the couch will help keep the fur in control. Give your pet a treat as a reward for staying in their spot to reinforce good behaviour.

3. Alternatively, try furniture covers

If you simply can’t imagine restricting fur-baby cuddles to designated areas of your home, consider covering your compromised furniture with easily washable covers. Bemz is an online retailer that specialise in affordable covers for Ikea furniture, but easily-washable cotton throws and blankets will also do the trick.

4. Invest in a lint roller

Lint rollers are quick, easy and cheap to buy, and the answer to all your furred furniture and clothing. Run the roller over your furniture each night to pick up stray fur, and keep one handy by the wardrobe for your clothes.

5. Know the tools of the trade

Nothing makes cleaning up after a pet easier than a good quality vacuum. Look for one with excellent suction, attachments that will pick up hair easily, is manoeuvrable and has a HEPA filer.

6. Make it fun

There’s an abundance of funky pet-fur products out there, and many of them are so effective it’s actually fun to use them. This might be a good way to encourage the kids to help keep the home fur-free. Try a pet-fur glove for an experience both you ad your pet can enjoy.
