Not all skin care products are made the same. The ingredients, their levels and the formulations all play a part in determining the cost and effectiveness.

The best things you can do for your skin is keep it clean, moisturised and protected from UV and pollution damage. You don’t need to buy expensive products to do this, but if you want to improve or repair your skin’s health and condition you may need to up your investment.

Before purchasing think about your skin and what you’d like to focus on, for example fine lines, large pores, dryness and then choose products accordingly. If you need help with choosing products talk to a consultant or professional skin therapist.

4 types of products

Below is a general guide to skin care types, but keep in mind they often overlap.

1. Mass market skin care

Affordable, essential skin care made for the majority of people. These brands may be inexpensive but they’re often owned by companies who also own expensive skin care lines and the research and development filters through.

Brands include L’Oreal, Nivea, Simple.

2. Department store skin care

These brands vary greatly in price and the levels of active ingredients which can potentially benefit your skin. Their big advertising campaigns can lead to high expectations so when choosing products talk to a consultant about their suitability for your skin.

Brands include Lancôme, Clarins, Natio.

3. Professional skin care

Higher levels of active ingredients in these products increases their ability to boost your skin’s health and correct skin problems. A therapist can tailor a skin care regime to suit your individual needs and help you achieve optimal results.

Brands include DMK, Ultraceuticals, Dermalogica.

4. Luxury skin care

Products with top-end pricing, packaging and exotic ingredients. These products are for those wanting maximum results where the price is no obstacle. Do your own research before deciding whether you personally will benefit from this level of investment.

Brands include, La Mer, La Prairie, SKII.

Note: Regardless of the type of products, ingredients should be checked if allergies are a problem.
