How to choose the right rug for your space

5 simple steps to rugged glory! - by Better Homes and Gardens

How to choose the right rug for your space

Choosing the right rug for your space can be hard! How durable does it need to be? Shagpile or woven? Neutral or printed? The decisions are endless, but there are five things to take into consideration for easy rugging...

What's more, we've found our absolute favourite rugs for winter right here that you should have a peep at!

Size and layout

Consider where you want your rug placed and how much area you want it to cover. Bigger is always better! A larger rug draws the eye out and creates space in a room. For visual confirmation, use masking tape to mark out exactly where you would like it to go. Remember to measure twice (or more) and order once! Ideally, your rug should fit the size of your seating area and connect with your furniture to create flow and feel united with the remainder of the room. Take for example in the living room; the front feet of your lounge should be on the rug and nothing less. In a dining room; there should be plenty of room for chairs to be pulled out. In the bedroom; at least 2/3 underneath the bed. Trust your gut and measure twice, cut once!

Colour & Pattern

A rug can be one of the largest pieces of decor in a room so it has the ability to make or break the design of your space. Consider your existing or chosen decor and choose a colour and/or pattern to suit. You need to take into consideration the colour of flooring, walls, existing furniture and window furnishings. If there is already too much going on choose something neutral and plain. Need something in your already neutral room? A patterned rug can act like a piece of art and lift the room.

Texture

Mix textures to create warmth, comfort and layers of richness in your chosen space. However, consider existing textures in the room before deciding on a textured rug. They should be in contrast, not matching.

Use & Practicalities

Who will be using the rug? Is it in high traffic areas? Cleaning? These are some very important points to consider when choosing your rug, the colour and the material. You wouldn’t want a light coloured rug in an area where children are eating or playing a lot. A high pile rug in a high traffic area could pose problematic for the young, the elderly and tripping hazard. Tip: Choose a durable material for high traffic zones, one that is easy to spot clean or can be dry cleaned.

Samples

Request a sample from your supplier or store. Take it home, lay it out and look at it close-up and from afar. Is it the right colour? Does it tie in with your existing décor? Is the pattern too much? Not enough? Is the texture right? If you’re not happy with it, it won’t work. Don’t feel like you are being a pain of a customer, you NEED to get it right. Rugs can be expensive and timeless pieces, choose wisely and be sure of your final decision.
