Dermatologist issues warning about gel manicure UV lamps

What kind of manicure have you been getting? - by Laura Barry

Protecting your skin against harmful UV rays is a basic health and beauty rule almost everyone follows, but it seems there is one source of UV light we’ve been overlooking.

Gel manicures are an incredibly popular nail treatment among women, and one that many of us think is totally risk-free and harmless. However, as we’ve read before, gel and acrylic manicures actually carry a small health risk factor, in particular – the UV and LED light lamps that are used to set the gel manicure top coats.

In an interview with Byrdie, dermatologist Dr. Dana Stern, who specializes in nail health, explains just how harmful the UV rays from LED and UV lamps can be.

Dr Stern explains that nail UV lamps emit UVA rays that are associated with skin ageing, dark spots and wrinkles – not great, considering our hands are one of the first areas of our bodies to reveal our age. And sadly, even if you opt for an LED light, these lamps still emit a form of UVA ray.

Although many studies have looked at the skin cancer risk of these lamps, and many studies have deemed the level of risk to be very low, the fact remains that the more your skin is exposed to UV rays, the higher the risk of negative effects on your skin.

So, for those who are fans of UV-lamp cured gel manicures, its incredibly important to visit a qualified and professional nail technician for your manicure, and ensure you are taking the appropriate steps to protect the skin on your hands, and prevent signs of ageing.
