This is why you'll now be taxed for visiting France

This is why you'll now be taxed for visiting France

France is one of the most popular holiday destinations for tourists. From the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the French Riviera, France is a holiday-makers dream. However, travelling to France from Australia is a costly exercise thanks to the long-haul flights and exchange rates, and it’s about to cost travellers even more.

From the start of 2020, anyone travelling from France via plane will be slapped with a new tax, ranging from AU$2.40 to AU$28 depending on your class of plane ticket.

The tax applies to any plane tickets purchased from the start of next year and has been dubbed the ‘eco-tax’ as all funds collected will be used to fund environmentally friendly transport alternatives. Despite the good intentions of the tax, it has not been welcomed by aviation authorities or customers.

The ‘eco-tax’ will cost between 1.50 euros and 18 euros and will be applied to plane tickets for flights departing France. The tax will not be applied to flights arriving in France or flights that connect in France.

In the grand scheme of things, adding an extra few dollars to an already expensive flight ticket isn’t so bad, especially if it will help the environment!
