Urgent health warning for South Australia: stay indoors

Urgent health warning for South Australia: stay indoors

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings for central South Australia today, where wind gusts will be reaching up to 100km an hour, and will potentially create a dust storm.

The severe weather warning is particularly important for people who suffer from asthma, respiratory or cardiac conditions as the severe weather event may aggravate their symptoms.

Those people at risk have been advised to stay inside with windows and doors closed, take their medication as per usual, carry their reliever medication at all times and consult a medical professional if they begin to experience severe symptoms.

“If there are adverse weather conditions involving a lot of dust in the air, people with asthma should be diligent to follow steps to minimise risks of a flare up,” Asthma Australia CEO Michele Goldman said in a statement.

This July has been reported as the driest for South Australia since 1999 and that’s resulted in low soil-moisture levels across the state. A combination of these things and a vigorous front has the potential to cause a dust storm.

The areas expected to be affected by the storm are Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Ceduna and Port Augusta

The precautionary warning follows the killer storm in Melbourne two years ago in which 10 people with asthma died and thousands called Triple-0 for help as a thunderstorm full of pollen blanketed the city.
