These are the biggest paint trends for 2019

Stay ahead of the trends with this expert guide. - by Laura Barry
  • 12 Sep 2018

Each year the paint and colour specialists at Dulux analyse current social and style trends to accurately forecast the next big thing in colour and decorating for the year ahead. This year, Dulux has revealed four palettes (Identity, Repair, Legacy and Wholeself) as the up and coming cool palettes for 2019. Dulux colour expert, Andrea Lucena-Orr, talks us through the colour trends for 2019, what they are, who they’re for and where to use them in your home

1. REPAIR

The REPAIR colours are earth-based, natural and muted tones in colours such as reddish browns, cinnamon and sienna, natural greens and golds.

Why is it an upcoming trend?

The Repair palette takes its cues from our need to examine our consumption and waste. It favours more natural colours as well as vintage design, sustainable, repurposed and recycled products.

Who does this trend suit?

This is a palette for everyone!  The muted tones are so easy to decorate with and they exude warmth. They are also suitable for any space in the home, right from the lightest in Dulux China White through to the deepest welcoming brown in Dulux Beggar.

2. WHOLESELF

The WHOLESELF palette draws together gentle shades of mauve-grey, powdery pinks and touches of gold to create serene and calming interiors. Soft and subtle colours such as Dulux Shetland Lace Half, Ecru and Silver Thaw as well as stronger highlights in citrus, Dulux Limone and a green/blue in Dulux New Life.

Why is it an upcoming trend?

From our global research it’s clear there will be an emphasis on wellness and mindfulness in 2019 and the Wholeself palette really works well with these themes. With its soft, light tones and subtle layers of texture, it’s a palette to ignite the senses and revive a tired spirit.

Who does this trend suit?

This trend would suit most homes as it’s calming and subtle and many of the colours are quite neutral and would work in many homes.

3. LEGACY

LEGACY is a palette of intense, saturated hues such as deep purple, russet and aqua, offset by brown-based pinks.  Purple has emerged as a base colour and is softened by paler shades of lilac and mauve. Deeper colours such as Dulux Purple Verbena, Deep Aqua and Belly Fire, balanced by warmer mid shades of Dulux Porcelain Crab, Shepherd’s Warning and Pink Linen Half.

Why is it an upcoming trend?

The spaces we occupy tell a story: one that speaks not just of our past, but also the history of those who came before us. The Legacy palette is timeless yet thoroughly modern. Think rich colour, classic furniture and sumptuous textiles used in unexpected ways.

Who does this trend suit?

The Legacy palette would especially suit formal spaces such as a master bedroom or guest bedroom, hallway, entrance or study.  This sumptuous palette has a sense of luxury and elegance that would highlight your favourite spaces and create a sense of delight.

4. IDENTITY

Featuring striking blues, purples and shades of citrus, this palette encourages you to incorporate a playful side into your décor. Colours such as Dulux Golden Sand for a positive lift and Dulux Painted Clay for a tantalising coral, mixed in with deeper blues such as Dulux Genie and Mitchell Blue.  Use a Dulux Most Loved white for a main colour and then build your own story from there with brighter colour.

Why is it an upcoming trend?

The Identity palette speaks to the rule breaker in all of us. Clashing patterns, quirky combinations and no-holds-barred brights come to the fore, bringing with them a sense of optimism and cheer.

Who does this trend suit?

These colours encourage you to be brave and experience unique looks in the home. These will work particularly well in the bedroom as it’s a personal space that’s all about what you love. Paint the door, a piece of furniture or a feature nook in a bright and invigorating shade and watch the room come to life.
