HOW-TO:

  1. Take one star and, using the combination square with a pencil, draw a line from any point to the inward angle, marking 40mm from the point.
  2. Then, counting clockwise by three points to reach the opposite point, repeat to draw a line and mark 40mm from the point.
  3. Working on an offcut, drill the holes using a 4.5mm drill bit.
  4. Using the first star with the holes as a template, drill into three stars at a time.
  5. Use the abrasive paper to remove the pencil marks, then lightly sand the front face of each star to improve the paint adhesion.
  6. Position the stars on the plastic-backed drop sheet and lightly spray a first coat with orange paint and leave to dry.
  7. Apply a second coat of orange spray paint and leave to dry.
  8. Spritz yellow paint at the top of each star, focusing on the section between the holes for maximum light reflection, and leave to dry.
  9. Unwind the string of lights then triple it up so there are three even lengths and the final length is about 1.9m.
  10. Check the wire is straight and match up the lights on the lengths so there are clusters of three lights.
  11. Wrap tape around the loose end of the wire to make it easier for threading through the stars.
  12. Thread the stars onto the wire from the back, moving them along the wire and positioning so there is a cluster of lights at the centre of each.
  13. Roll a small pea-sized ball of the glue putty and push it onto the holes at the back of the first and last star to hold the wire in place, leaving the putty glue to dry and harden.
  14. Hang your lights and turn them on!
